Babson / Olin MBA Essay Topic Analysis 2017-2018

Following up on the Babson / Olin essay topics for 2017-2018, we wanted to share our essay topic analysis.  Babson has overhauled their essay questions this year, dispensing with the typical career goals essay and instead requesting insights into applicants’ characteristics and passions.

2017-2018 Babson MBA Essay Topic Analysis

Let’s take a closer look at each prompt.

Required Essay

When reviewing applications for new members of our community, Babson College looks for students who embody a variety of characteristics. From the list below, choose one that resonates, and describe a past experience where you embodied this characteristic. (400 words or less)

  • Global Perspective
  • Comfort with Ambiguity
  • Social Impact
  • Creative Action/Problem Solving
  • Collaborative Spirit

This question reflects Babson’s interest in identifying students who are in a position to contribute meaningfully to the school’s community. Candidates will be well served by some deep reflection on this topic, with the ultimate goal of offering insight into how they have represented—and will represent—one of the given values.

There are a couple of ways to approach figuring out your content for this essay.  To start, you can read through the list of characteristics and see which one (or two) resonates with you the most, then figure out which of your accomplishments best supports that sentiment.  Or, you may develop a list of your top five greatest accomplishments, and see which theme rises most prominently or what theme is apparent in your greatest achievement.  No particular characteristic carries more weight than another; the key is to provide a substantial anecdote to support your selection.

Applicants may consider using the STAR technique to structure their story:

  • Situation – Set the stage or identify the situation and which characteristic you are demonstrating.
  • Task – Identify the task or project that you set out to perform.
  • Action – Describe the actions you took to complete the project.
  • Result – Summarize the (hopefully positive) outcome.

In concluding the essay, it would behoove you to explain how this enables you to contribute to the Babson community.  Whether in particular courses or club activities, Babson will also want to see how this characteristic enables your fit with the program.

Optional Essay

Use this optional essay to share anything not reflected in your application (or something on which you would like to expand) that you would like the admissions committee to know. This can be anything from hobbies, passions, extenuating circumstances, gaps in work or academic history, etc.

Please share in whichever medium you prefer (essay, PowerPoint, video). Keep in mind we have many applications to review and your submission should be less than 250 written words or 2 minutes in video form.
This is not a typical optional essay, as the adcom invites applicants to talk about more than just extenuating circumstances that might have a meaningful impact on their consideration of one’s application. Instead, this seemingly unusual and unstructured prompt speaks to Babson’s interest in the applicants’ personality, abilities and skills in self-expression. All of this “white space”—whether in essay, video or presentation format—might be daunting to some, but an easy way to approach this process is to ask oneself a few simple questions. Do you have to address extenuating circumstances and/or can you showcase your talents? What new and important information about yourself can you introduce to the adcom? How does that information lend itself to the formats available (essay vs. presentation)? Are you more of a visual presenter/thinker who will be very comfortable showcasing information in PowerPoint or video, or is writing more your strength/comfort zone? In terms of organization for a presentation or an essay, are there separate topics to which you would like to devote a slide, clip or essay section? Or would you prefer to use the framework of your presentation or paragraphs of an essay to create a sense of progression through a current activity, past experience, “day in the life,” etc.?

We’re hesitant to provide too much guidance given the free-form nature of the task; the best advice we can offer is to think about who you are, consider how you could translate this into words and images, and then give it a try. Showing the initial result to someone who knows you well could be a great way to determine the effectiveness of a working draft.  Also, if you choose to venture into video, be sure to check out our related advice.
