Life Lesson Essay Conclusion Format

Step 1: Teach students the components of an effective position paper body. (If desired, begin the Lesson Four: Writing the Body of a Position Paper Presentation.) Explain that a Position Paper Conclusion should:

  • Restate your thesis.
  • Sum up the main points made in the body of your essay.
  • End with a strong statement.

Step 2: Instruct students to take out the model position paper. Read the concluding paragraph aloud. Have students assess whether or not the model conclusion contains all of the required components.

Step 3: Have students write the conclusions for their position papers. Be sure that students refer to their class notes as they write.

Step 4: When students are finished writing their conclusions, have them review their first draft as a whole and add any necessary details. Remind students to check the Position Paper Rubric to make sure they are meeting all expectations of the assignment.

Optional: Have students type or write a clean, final version of their position papers.

As students are working on their conclusions, you may need to place your struggling students and ELLs in a small group and use the model to review the key features of a concluding paragraph.

Have students work in partnerships in order to assess each other's conclusions.

Home Connections

Have students read their entire first draft to a friend or family member.

Review student conclusions and determine whether or not they have restated their theses and summed up the main points made. Use the Position Paper Rubric as a guide.

Using a frame story for the introduction and conclusion should be familiar to you from lots of movies.One good example of a story frame is UP. In this case, the movie opens with the frame of Carl looking at the scrapbook Ellie has made for him about their life and dreams, before flashing to the present story of Carl and Russell and their adventures. The movie returns to the frame at the end of the movie as Carl looks at the last page of the photobook Ellie has made for him. He learns that it was the journey of the relationship which was the real adventure.

Another kind of frame can be a flashback. In this technique, you start in the middle of the action (or after it is over) and then flashback to an earlier memory. The Notebook uses the story of a man spending time with his wife with Alzheimer's as the frame for his re-telling the story of their romance.

The advantage of using a frame is that it makes it easier for you to talk about the meaning of the story, especially if you use the present day to flashback to the past. Be sure the frame is not just random. There should be an event, object, conversation, or situation which causes you to flash back in memory.
